A Coast Guard Life – Tom Brown

I’m Tom Brown Chief assigned to the
US Coast Guard Cutter Yellowfin. I grew up in Guam, so when I was assigned to
Charleston it was natural for me to want a home on the island. It’s only 15 minutes
to the station and this is a great neighborhood with good schools. My kids
are six and nine so that was a pretty important part of the decision. I also wanted a big garage, one of my
hobbies is building surfboards. You learn something new each time you build a
board and then ride it. This is my sixth. There’s a lot of science in the building
process and a little bit of art and I just love working with my hands. The surf is pretty inconsistent at Folly
Beach but, there are still waves. And a lot of fun to be had. My wife’s a yoga instructor and a school
teacher, she enjoys living in Charleston and we take advantage of the expansive
food and entertainment options here. She’s from Georgia so when I have the
weekends off we’re able to make the quick trip over so she can see her
family, and the kids get time with their grandparents and cousins. I love the
Coast Guard its given me a career, it keeps me near the water and allow me to live a lifestyle I love.
