Adaptive Canoeing : Canoeing for the Disabled: Attaching the Paddle Wheel

And now that we have a little bit more of
a basic understanding of how the paddle wheel was designed, and how you might be able to
make one yourself, let’s talk now about how to attach the paddle wheel to the canoe. You
don’t want to just lay it on top of the canoe here, because it’ll slide back and forth,
so we have to attach it to what we call the gunnels. The gunnels are these black pieces
of plastic running along the top of the canoe frame here, and when adjusting the paddle
wheel to your canoe, you want to take in a few things for consideration. First is most
people that use the adaptive paddle wheel also use the adaptive seating, so you want
to put the paddle wheel in a respective place of the person in the chair, meaning you don’t
want to put the paddle wheel way out in front of em’ so they’re leaning over, trying to
paddle; straining their back. You want to put it in a comfortable area for them. And
you also want to make sure; just give it a good eye and make sure that the paddle wheel
goes straight across the canoe, because if it’s off to the side you’ll just wind up paddling
in circles all day, which isn’t necessarily fun. The best way this paddle wheel connects
to the canoe is it has some clamps here, and this clamp just goes underneath the gunnel,
and you’ll hold it in place, and then it’s fastened down just by tightening this screw.
And so, you’ll tighten it down like so, and you’ll do it to both sides, and once we have
both sides set up we’ll have a friend in here again, and just demonstrating how both the
chair and the paddle wheel work together.
