Amputee Driving: Learning to Drive After My Amputation

Amputee Driving: Learning to Drive After My Amputation

So quite often when I reverse I don’t know what they want you to do, but I would actually turn it might be easier Yeah, with my no hand on the wheel…. Okay. Well, you can’t do that then you can’t do that My heart is beating out of my chest. Did you pass? You have to be willing to find the light though? You have to be willing to believe in yourself and to believe in your story and to believe that there’s more that we’re going through And that what you’re going through is going to bring you Further into who you’re supposed to be and your calling and find the good in it Hey guys, welcome back to my channel if it’s your first time here, my name is Kristie Sita and I post videos every Friday so today we are covering My journey to getting back on the road as an amputee So if you’re new here, obviously, you’re figuring out that I’m gonna amputate bla bla bla bla bla We know the story so about that is I was about to get my end License probably two months after that when I was turning 17 because I was 16 at the time So I had two months left of driving after my accident so after my accident, I kept driving and the police pulled me over and they’re like You cannot drive because now I’m actually legally handicapped by the government So I had to get form sign from the government Before I could legally get back on the road And by the time I got them back, I had already moved to the city and now here we are five years later It’s taken me a heck of a time. We’re gonna go get my license So we are off to go get my L fingers crossed Let’s skadoodle. Let’s go down to ICBC gonna get my L gonna come home gonna report back to you guys. I have my freakin L Stay tuned Drum roll please. I Got my n L. So now let’s go home and learn how to drive Okay, oh we’re driving okay so turning oh, okay pull into either way and then back up do that perk job But on the brake Okay, we’re reversing already. All right, so quite often when I reverse I don’t know what they want you to do, but I would actually might be easier. Yeah, what’s mine? No hand. Oh, yeah, okay We can’t do that then you can’t do that You’re gonna back up into that space there. Oh, yeah, perfect Totally so stop is that full stop I did start this no I didn’t Okay guys, so I have been on the road now for like an hour, but sorry, I stopped filming there It’s just a little bit hard to you know, film and drive for your first time ever So I turned it off because I wanted to survive. I think I’m actually doing pretty good. I just got a little scared I’m like how close I am to either side and I’m a little jittery jittery But so you guys can see this is what I do. I still keep my stump on the steering wheel. So I’m like this and then I put my hand like there and I’ve got this little knobby do So this little knobby do is for when I’m doing like turning that this will actually like move my whole wheel So it’s super helpful, and I’ll try to get my mom to film some of that But um, just check it in to say I’m doing really good mom’s gonna keep driving me around Found out I booked my test for Monday guys So I have six days to learn how to drive and not just learn how to drive but learn how to drive with one hand I’m gonna keep practicing and we’ll film again soon. Bye Okay, yeah, you got to open that Maybe there’s a button on the inside of the car. There’s a button on the inside lower left the wrong one. Yeah, no Put your card in You know No, it’s not Under which it’s gonna be lift nozzle Push the type of gas you’re gonna go lesser gas Cheap gas there you go. And now you pull the handle hold handle pull it It’ll stop Straining my baby It’s a fast pump You’re lucky Professional gas pumper over here you will be Definitely it’ll go to like 70 bucks Perfect experience your first day driving the car Push it again Okay, yep first time pumping gas Well, okay so looking all around 360 right now Turning the wheel Completely if you thing it just a little bit of guy getting a full picture look at the scenes This guy is not letting me in Now I do have a safe window here son boy That’s a safety hazard Red light currently at a red light Recognizing that I don’t have a turning thing so that I will have to yield to the opposite side of the street and the opposite Side is going straight right now. And now I do have a green light, but it’s not quite safe yet So I do see that safe window and I’m going to go firstly in here Okay, everybody Turning left coming up to a stop. We’re going to slow down starting to break checking behind me. Just Rolling right up to this stop sign here gonna stop for a few please two seconds. That’s one and two Recognizing I am turning the left side of the last go but it is clear for me and I’d say Very good. It’s a complete This one two inching up just the littlest but recognizing this rippin car Coming up over here. He’s turning so but recognizing the opposite side of the street Also has some ripping cars coming up This guy is going a little bit slow, but it’s not quite safe for me to come out yet I’m looking all around I’m shoulder checking. I’m seeing that that car is very far away I’m doing a burnout and going into the way and All right, everybody. Welcome to driving school with Christy very excited Here she’s doing so good About to do a parallel park everybody, okay Slowing down recognizing putting on my blinker communicating its key Coming up to where his backdoor would now be I’m gonna do a full crank looking all around me 360 skin rolling backwards behind me not looking at you guys because that is a complete safety hazard All right Now fool crank the other way going a little bit straight back here and now we’re going to full ring Coming up making sure I am clear up front going right into a perfect parking spot And now it’s going to reverse a little bit because oh no, I’m perfect. I don’t need your reverse put that puppy in park I put on my emergency brake tell my mommy to go check the outside line and We’re a little bit far away still very good still very good. You hear that kids. We’re done here I’ll touch base with you in a little bit. Bye Oh What my crazy goodness guys today is the freakin day I am taking my end test in about two hours I am absolutely terrified because at this point I just kind of feel like I I have to get this like I just cannot fail So I’m really nervous But I’m just gonna go really slow the thing about the coast and in the end test if you go like the tiniest bit over Your speed limit they fail you and everybody on the coast Wants to go over the speed limit and tell gates you and sits on your butt to make you go faster So that’s me. My biggest challenge is staying in the speed But you want to show that you are anything but a speeder so my mom is about to take me for my last little run around seashell for the next hour and a half and then I’m gonna be going to ICBC and taking my test. So Today’s the day that I get my freaking license stay posted three Breathe again for me. I need all the breasts and let’s just freakin do this thing Okay guys, so this is I’m not gonna look at you because that’s Thank You Heather Since the Cardinal 15 minutes before my test checking behind me all around me looking at all, right? All right window Let’s do a left turn here because she would like to fail me as I merge when to this backcombing Street looking all around Shoulder check moving forward and turning left safely landing right in my proper lane And now I’m going to proceed whooping All right, so turning on my blinker and looking behind me coming to a complete Stop rolling right into the spoiler way stop. We’re gonna hold for one, Mississippi two, Mississippi were gonna Squeeze forward just so I can get a full view I have there right away here, but I have to go into the tightest lane even though that was a little bit quick I’m gonna let this guy past me now And then I’m going to purge and after did that big shoulder check oh great, remember friedland drive Really sick. Okay. Wow What a perfect park putting on my emergency brake looking at my examiner and saying hey we want to pass me now My heart is beating out of my chest did you pass? My god I’m not driving with it. I’m just talking to them real quick My mom’s getting mad because you guys are on here, but I’m not gonna drive get it on. Don’t worry Okay, my mum and my dad was my first time that keep driving by myself Let’s go She’s a big girl I’m a big girl Guys I’m driving with nobody else in the car I don’t feel safe with you going but Moral of the story is I have my license and I’m gonna go for my first drive by myself and enjoy it. Alright See you later kids

You’re going to love it when all those driving rules are automatic for you. When I drove a 18 wheeler I had one of those little driving balls also, they are not for just one hand drivers anymore!

My driving teacher at school was awesomely european. He smoked 3 cigarettes in our 30 minute driving session and taught me a life lesson while at the stop light in an intersection. With a heavy albanian accent he said " RED light, you always stop at RED light but remmember red light will CHANGE and you must go. You go forward, such is LIFE." 😬

Just a heads up you probably can’t drive with a camera mounted anyways as an N driver 😂 it’s likely considered an electronic device and if they see it mounted you’ll get a ticket.

Don't become a lazy driver. My term for someone who stops following the rules of the road ie; not coming to complete stops at STOP signs. Also, don't let other drivers dictate how you drive or how fast you drive ie; tailgaters.
Watch some some road rage vids on YT…😂 It will open your eyes about how not to drive.
    God bless, Kristie! 😘

This little knobbydo, why you gotta be so cute? I have an 8 ball on the steering wheel in my Peterbilt, my 8 ball knobbydo.. 😀
Just make sure you program your brain to drop that ball and grab the steering wheel, some of those things are known to break.. And never mess with your phone while driving, put all your focus on what's in front of the car at all times. In the blink of an eye, your car is destroyed and there's a dead deer on the road. I know I don't need to explain that to you, I'm sure you understand from the boating accident, pretty much the same, that's how fast it can happen..
And congratulations, we are happy for you, we are proud of you, and we love you ❤💕

I’ve no idea what means the L and N… where I live we have “white license” for those that are in driving school and “regular” for all passed all tests and allowed on the road.
I wonder what are differences between countries across the world in driving tests/learning to drive/procedures of getting the license/ etc…

    Also- congrats 🎉

Congratulations on getting your license! Yeah, more independence. In high school, I had a friend with Epidermolysis bullosa. He drove with a steering wheel attachment that looked more like a cup (for lack of a better word). He put his stump in there to steer. I don't know if that would be more helpful for you or not but I thought maybe you could use your stump with it. He had no fingers, only two stumps and drove everywhere. He was also missing a foot but I'm not sure what adaptations (if any) he had for the pedals.
