Becoming a TowBoatUS Captain | BoatUS

I’m Christine Plummer, and TowBoatUS
Annapolis, Baltimore, and Middle River is my home. We have 10 boats – almost 11 – we just
got a new one. It was my husband that got us into the towing business. My wife does all the dispatching and runs the office. I get to work and play
on the boats and handle that side of it. Now my sons are starting to get
involved with getting their captain’s license and helping with the boats and
around the shop. Dale was in corporate sales, but he knew he always wanted to be on the water. The reason I got into towing boats was really the joy of growing up on the water and getting back to working on the water. It’s also an
opportunity to help people at the same time, and support my family and still do
something I love doing. When he made that life-changing decision and decided to become the boat captain, it was the best decision he’s ever made. He was the
driving force behind it all. I ended up working part time for him, and
then full time for him, and now my kids are working for us. It’s definitely a
family business. My friends still look at me and say, “Remember the day you came to preschool and you were saying, ‘Oh my God… …my husband just quit his job to be a
boat captain,’ and I was like, ‘yeah it worked out pretty well, didn’t it?'” (Laughs)

Congratulations on pursuing your dream. How does one become a tow boat captain? Is it a USCG cert?
