Boater missing on Fernan Lake

SOUND JACK (43:32) “It was just after 4:30 am Tuesday when a small boat carrying two men in Fernan Lake capsized sending both into the cold water. Unfortunately only one was able to make it to shore.”¤W8 26 ]] C2.5 G 12 [[ runs=0:12 SOUND HIGGINS (38:36) “We got a call from the surviving victim. He was able to get out of the water, go to the truck, drive the truck down the street to a fisherman who was on the shore and they were able to use the phone from him.”¤W9 26 ]] C2.5 G 11 [[ RUNS=0:11 That call came into dispatch at 5:10 – and in a matter of minutes the Kootenai County Sheriff’s office had divers and air support searching for the missing Boater. However, as the sun came up and the hours wore on, optimism they’d find the man alive began to fade SOUND HIGGINS (39:21) The temperature right now of Fernan Lake is in the low 50s so if they didn’t have a jacket on they’d have to get out of the water in 10 minutes or so. Once that hits they’ll start losing some motor skills and get disoriented hypotheria will start kicking in”¤W10 26 ]] C2.5 G 15 [[ runs=0:15 After several hours of searching, once the operation became a body recover mission, Kootenai Authorites were able to take a step back and begin organizing their search with a different approach SOUND HIGGINS (40:02) The dive team’s going to regroup, we’re going to get a little bit more equipment. It sounds like we’re going to remove the boat from the water and dive that point in a little
more search pattern oriented position.”¤W11 26 ]] C2.5 G 13 [[ RUNS=0:13 reporting from North Idaho, Jack Ferris, KXLY 4 news
