MARISA: A BIG ISLAND MAN IS THANKFUL TO BE ALIVE TONIGHT AFTER A TERRIFYING ENCOUNTER WITH A WHALE OFF THE COAST OF KONA. HOAWRD: THE MAN WAS BROUGHT BACK TO SHORE BY A PASSING TOUR BOAT. ELYSSA AREVALO SPOKE WITH THE PADDLER IN A STORY YOU’LL SEE ONLY ON 2….ELYSSA? ELYSSA: HOWARD AND MARISA, THE PADDLER TELLS ME HE WAS THROWN FROM HIS CANOE BUT HE IS OK. HE SAYS HE’S IN SHOCK AND STILL CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED. EDDIE HAYWARD HAD ERRANDS TO RUN FRIDAY AFTERNOON BUT HE DECIDED TO HIT THE WATER WITH FRIENDS INSTEAD. EDDIE HAYWARD/PADDLER: i was supposed to do my christmas shopping today and I put that aside to do go do a down wind run and i’m kinda thinking I shouldve went christmas shopping instead THAT DECISION NEARLY CHANGED HIS LIFE. HERE’S VIDEO EDDIE TOOK WHILE HE AND THREE FRIENDS PADDLED OUT ON THE WATER, YOU CAN SEE A WHALE BREACHING IN THE DISTANCE! BUT MINUTES LATER….THAT EXCITEMENT TURNED TO FEAR. EDDIE HAYWARD/PADDLER: “I got in a nice swell and I was just having fun and all of a sudden I just noticed a dark shadow coming from beneath and then all I saw was a pectoral fin, coming like a dagger and it was one of thise where you wanna hit the pause button THE IMPACT THREW EDDIE INTO THE WATER. THE AMA AND THE YAKO FROM HIS CANOE WERE GONE AND HIS CANOE WAS FLOATING AWAY. EDDIE HAYWARD/PADDLER: “i was kinda worried about the tail fin kicking up after EDDIE HAYWARD/PADDLER: after that point in time it was just a matter of staying alive, staying afloat. ONE OF HIS FRIENDS EVENTUALLY NOTICED EDDIE WASN’T IN HIS CANOE AND PADDLED OVER. CLINGING ONTO HIS FRIEND’S CANOE AND WHAT WAS LEFT OF HIS, THE TWO TRIED PADDLING BACK INLAND WHEN A TOUR BOAT FROM JACK’S DIVING LOCKER CAME TO THEIR RESCUE.
