Coast Guard members teach basic damage control

We’re here for instructional drills and safety orientation for local fishermen there’s approximately 35 fishermen that are taking this current course. This is our fourth course for this fiscal year. They give us 10 hours of their time, they get an AMSEC card, which looks like this. It’s an Alaska Safety Education Card. For a lot of these guys it’s about education. For the Coast Guard, we do drills we get underway we do things to prepare our time for the worst case scenario. To these guys, safety is one of the last things on their mind. They’re concerned about the fishing. So, all we’re trying to do is just give them a little bit of knowledge so where if something happens you don’t freak out you take it one step at a time and know that they have the proper tools to combat a fire or damage control situation. The one thing that we feel is important is trying to get the word out. We’re here to help, we’re not here to make their life any more complicated than it already is and that we’re here to give them…you know…if we can save one life it’s worth all this trouble.
