Coast Guard Prepares for Mass Rescue

LIVES WERE SAVED ON THE WATER TODAY AT DAUPHIN ISLAND…. AT LEAST IN PRACTICE. THE COAST GUARD AND OTHER AGENCIES WERE INVOLVED IN AN EXERCISE WITH THE DAUPHIN ISLAND FERRIES… RESPONDING TO AN INCIDENT THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED… BUT COULD. NEWS 5’S BILL RIALES WAS THERE TO SEE THE TRAINING. IT’S WHAT THE COAST GUARD DOES WHEN THEY AREN’T ACTUALLY RESCUING PEOPLE—THEY PRACTICE FOR IT. JUST OFF DAUPHIN ISLAND, THE COAST GUARD TEAMED UP WITH HMS FERRIES FOR A MASS RESCUE EFFORT. Cmdr. Matt Derrenbacher/US Coast Guard: They offered up their Dauphin Island ferry–they simulated that they had a casualty or that we had to evacuate a lot of people. Bill: Well the good news is there’s never really been an accident like the one being simulated today involving the dauphin island ferry–but the general manager of HMS Ferries says they aren’t going to give up a chance to practice and be prepared. Tim Aguirre/HMS Ferries: At hms and at aldot, we want to run as safe a ferry operation as we possibly can and of course one of the ways that you do that is to practice. That’s why we partnered up with the coast guard today. DARRENBACHER SAYS IT’S NOT JUST A MATTER OF GETTING ALL THE PASSENGER OFF OF AN AILING BOAT SAFELY—BUT MAKING SURE THEY ARE ALL ACCOUNTED FOR. Accounting for missing personnel is sometimes the most challenging part of our job. SEVERAL OTHER AGENCIES WERE ALSO INVOLVED IN THE MOCK RESCUE–INCLUDIN G SOUTH ALABAMA RESCUE, THE MOBILE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND DAUPHIN ISLAND POLICE–SINCE ALL WOULD TYPICALLY RESPOND TO THIS TYPE OF AN EMERGENCY. IT’S ALL A RAMP UP TO HAVING COAST GUARD
