Coast Guard sets up flooding command center

RIVER ROAD TO SHOW WITH A LOOK
— TO SHOW US A LOOK AT THE
FLOODING. EMILY. EMILY: ERIC AND VICKI, I WANT TO
SHOW YOU SOMETHING. WHEN WE GOT HERE THIS MORNING
YOU COULD SEE THIS YELLOW LINE
GOING ALL THE WAY THROUGH. THIS IS RIVER ROAD. YOU CAN SEE THIS TRACK TRYING TO
MAKE ITS WAY THROUGH. WHEN YOU SEE ROADS COVERED WITH
WATER, STOP AND TURN AROUND. DON’T TRY TO DO WITH THIS TRUCK
IS DOING RIGHT NOW. THIS IS SOMETHING THE COAST
GUARD IS ASKING PEOPLE BOTH ON
THE RIVER AND ON THE ROADS, TO
JUST BE SAFE. THEY SAY THIS IS AN
ALL-HANDS-ON-DECK, LIKE TO KEEP
EVERYONE ON YOUR SAFE.>>PUBLIC SAFETY AND INDUSTRY
SAFETY IS OUR HIGHEST PRIORITY,
SO THE PUBLIC SHOULD AVOID THE
RIVER AND ANY FLOODWATERS. THAT’S JUST THE MOST IMPORTANT
THING. EMILY: RIGHT NOW BOATS AND
BARGES CAN TRAVEL ON THE OHIO
RIVER DURING THE DAY. THE COAST GUARD SAYS IT’S
WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE ARMY
CORPS OF ENGINEERS TO MONITOR
RIVER TRAFFIC.>>SOME OF THE LOCKS ARE
SHUTTING DOWN BECAUSE THEY’RE
GETTING TO THE RIVER LEVELS
WHERE THEY SHUT DOWN BECAUSE OF
THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS’
LEVELS. SO THE TRAFFIC IS STARTING TO
SLOW DOWN. EMILY: COMMANDER MOLLY WIKE SAYS
ABOUT 10 TO 15 MEMBERS OF THE
U.S. COAST GUARD ARE MONITORING
RIVER TRAFFIC AND RISING WATER
CONDITIONS AT THE DOWNTOWN
COMMAND CENTER.>>WE ARE WORKING WITH LOCAL
EMERGENCY-MANAGEMENT AGENCIES TO
PROVIDE URBAN SEARCH AND RESCUE
BOATS AS NEEDED. EMILY: SO FAR WIKE SAYS THE
COAST GUARD HASN’T HAD TO ASSIST
WITH ANY WATER RESCUES. SHE SAYS SAFETY IS THEIR TOP
PRIORITY AS THEY WAIT FOR THE
RIVER TO CREST.>>WE ARE MANAGING THE TRAFFIC
THROUGH LOUISVILLE, RIGHT NOW,
TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS. [RAIN FALLING]
EMILY: ON LAND, ROADS NEAR THE
RIVER ARE CLOSED AS WATER RISES. RIVER ROAD FROM ZORN AVENUE TO
WOLF PEN BRANCH ROAD IS SHUT
DOWN, FLOODWATERS COVERING THE
ROADWAY. FURTHER WEST, SHAWNEE GOLF
COURSE IS UNDERWATER AND ROADS
IN LAKE DREAMLAND ARE FLOODING,
TOO. BARRICADES ARE UP, BLOCKING OFF
SOUTH OVERBROOK DRIVE. YOU ARE TAKING A LOOK AT THE
OHIO RIVER FLOODWATERS THAT ARE
COMING INTO BACKYARDS NEAR THE
BUILDINGS OF SOME OF THESE
BUSINESSES HERE. WHEN WE WERE OUT HERE EARLIER
TODAY, SOME FAMILIES THAT LIVE
INSIDE THIS WHITE BUILDING WORK
MOVING THEIR STUFF OUT FROM THE
FIRST LEVEL, BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T
WANTED TO GET DAMAGED BY THE WATER. WE COULD ACTUALLY SEE THE
ASPHALT, WE COULD SEE THE GRASS
OF THE FRONT LAWN. NOW AS YOU CAN SEE, THAT’S ALL
COVERED WITH FLOODWATER. COMING UP TONIGHT ON WLKY AT
6:00, HEAR FROM PEOPLE WHO WERE
PROTECTING THEIR BUSINESSE
