Meet one of the most notorious aquatic invasive species in our region

Hi I’m Lindsay, Program Manager for Teatown’s
Aquatic Program, a new stewardship program that’s dedicated to educating community members
about the issues facing water bodies not only here at Teatown, but throughout the entire
Hudson Valley. So, one of the primary issues in our region is invasive species, and this
here a notorious invasive species known as Eurasian watermilfoil. Eurasian watermilfoil,
like so many other invasive species here, are problematic mostly because they out-compete
native plants, which take away habitat and food resources for our native fishes. So if
you are unfamiliar with aquatic invasive species, you don’t know anything about aquatic plants,
Eurasian watermilfoil is the one to know. And that’s just because it’s the most widespread
in our region. So what we actually tell people is: it’s more interesting to not find Eurasian
watermilfoil. So whether or not you have a body of water on your property that you’re
looking to manage, or you’re just interested in getting out and helping us search for invasive
species, or even if you just want to learn more, we have a number of programs that are
upcoming that you might be interested in. So visit teatown.org/water for more information.
