Panama Canal Cruise – Day 9 Grand Cayman

Panama Canal Cruise – Day 9 Grand Cayman

Special thanks to cruiseline.com for
sponsoring this video today of our 10 night Panama Canal cruise we absolutely
love using cruiseline.com to research all of our voyages we love the reviews
tips and photos from real everyday cruisers the forum’s ship mate app you
name it just dropped anchor in Grand Cayman which you can hear very clearly
from our room because we’re at the front of the ship
sounds pretty dramatic looks like we’re getting a bigger tender that little guy
right there looks like a city tender dropping a few of our own tenders also apparently there’s four ships in Grand
Cayman today there’s a Norwegian ship right there and then this Pullmentur
guy here and there must be something on the other side of the ship I don’t see a
fourth ship in port just lots and lots of tenders running which is a good thing
the announcement that was made just said that there’s no waiting for tender so
sounds like they’re pretty efficient this morning that or nobody wants to get
up early it’s only like 7:30 in the morning and are all aboard time is 2:00
so I have a funny feeling that there’s gonna be like a nine o’clock rush today
there’s some tender is waiting and it’s pretty cloudy today in Grand Cayman
hopefully it will it’ll clear up soon so we can have a nice sunny day at the
beach good morning from Grand Cayman we’re joined by all kinds of things this
morning helicopters cruise ships everywhere all kinds of fun we’re
getting ready to go have a great beach day at 7 mile beach getting off the ship
very soon but first wanted to tell you guys what is in my shore day bag today
usually we do separate episodes on that but I thought today would be fun to tell
you exactly what is in my bag in real time before we get off the ship
why so many helicopters you guys so funny can you see that helicopter? show
em okay all right so I’ll shout so you guys
can hear me over the helicopter we’re gonna pan down to my bag now and I’m
gonna tell you exactly what’s inside I have a beach towel we’re going to just
share one beach towel for the whole family and I tucked my water bottle
inside of it because my water bottle keeps getting really sweaty so we’re
gonna do that I have my son’s change of shorts here for after swimming his rash
guard here and then I have actually a change of cover up because I keep
finding that I’m getting really wet at the beach so I decided to take a change
and we have hats for the whole family his purse and a little sorry guys is
kind of a messy way to do it and in place of snorkel gear on this one we are
all just using goggles to kind of swim around at the beach on this trip so I
have goggles for the whole family over at my side pocket here kind of
self-explanatory but you see that I have sunscreen so we have a face sunscreen
and some spray sunscreens and then over here we have our sunglasses right there
in this front pouch I have hand sanitizing wipes and some lip gloss and
my husband has some spare batteries for the camera so we’re keeping it pretty
simple today that’s just about all we have in the shore day bag and I think
it’s nice to kind of keep it light I do have a little pouch in here as well it
has our photo ID money like $1 bills enough for a cab ride and a credit card
just in case we need to use a credit card at the beach grill so we are going
to go catch a tender now got really lucky today got one of the
open-air double-decker tenders that we prefer because it’s just a little bit
more fresh air the downside is it takes like three
times as long to load these suckers so we’re just hanging out and taking some
photos things like that as you can tell probably from the jerking of the footage
if the waves are pretty rocky so we keep kind of like ramming up against the
ship I feel bad for people who are getting on right now because they were
like being supported by two or three people helpers getting on but just glad
to have fresh air and you get opportunity to get better pictures up
here hey guys welcome to seven mile beach
we’re here finally whoo all right so here’s the way today has
been looking got off the ship yes I’m shouting because the ocean is loud and
there are five cruise ships in Grand Cayman States so my recommendation to if
you’re coming here is when you see someone holding up a sign for a taxi cab
go ahead and just take it you really can’t beat the system we tried to beat
the system by walking past all the crazy vendors like out on the street walking
down a hot street to find a cab and then the guy like made us wait forever so
just go with the vendors that are holding up the signs if it’s a crowded
day and there’s five ships in Grand Cayman so we decided to come to Royal
Palms and here’s why Royal Palms is kind of one of the closer spots on Seven Mile Beach to come if you
are doing a very short port stop which we are right now at ten o’clock and we have
to be back at 2:00 so we decided to try to take the path of least resistance it’s a two dollar entrance fee this place used to be a hotel so kind of alone
so it cost you two bucks to get in they have a really nice restaurant really
comfortable shaded beautiful great menu lots of good drinks I have some kind of
a caiman lemonade which is pretty good little too sweet
you can rent beach chairs for $12 umbrellas or 15 bucks so not really
peaceful relaxing and quiet but it is quick safe easy you know you’re gonna be
able to get a cab back it’s a comfortable place to be so we’re going
to go enjoy some food and a dip in the ocean as soon as possible we are back on the ship
it is 3:40 and there’s a problem with one of the tenders that they’re fixing
before we take off we were supposed to sail away at 3 o’clock but there’s been
a little bit of a delay but it’s beautiful hot sunny afternoon
unfortunately I can’t say we had the best experience today in Grand Cayman
after our taxi debacle where I probably didn’t make the right decision to walk
out on the street to get a taxi our taxi drivers strongly urged us to go to Royal
Palms that one was called Royal Palms honey I think was called world palms
anyway we had planned on going to the beach at Calico Jack’s but he kind of
strong-armed us into Royal Palms being better well it turns out that other than
the fact that that free Wi-Fi which is probably one of the only things we were
really loved about it it was really expensive the beach was like this big
and it was crowded and crazy and I would definitely not go back now there are
five ships in town today I would imagine that that place is a lot of fun when
there’s only one or two ships here it’s probably really tranquil and beautiful
kind of reminded me a little bit of Medano beach in Cabo but the beach is
just really small there so in the future I will definitely go somewhere else but
we’re in a hurry and I think we sort of had that impression that if we stayed
closer to the ship which that place it is closer we felt safe like we could get
back in time and we didn’t have more than three hours so that’s what we did
but Grand Cayman was beautiful I think if I come back I’d like to go snorkeling
or scuba diving because the water here is just stunningly beautiful and maybe
ask around to some folks who’ve been here before you get lots of good
information know that Sam one of our subscribers had suggested a lot of
beaches and we really should have taken Sam up I’m going to something like
cemetery beach but we needed to make sure we had shade and food and drinks
and kind of like you know the safety net of more of a public place but lesson
learned it was still fun it was beautiful so tomorrow’s our big sea day
we’re gonna be probably relaxing and roaming around the ship collecting all
of our photos and stuff like that and tonight we’re really excited to show you
guys our Crown Grille Steakhouse experience I can’t wait to have filet
mignon barely had any beef or anything in this whole cruise
because I’ve been saving myself that delicious filet mignon with horseradish We have reservations tonight at Crown Grill we’re really excited it smells so good right we walk up you can smell the charbroiled high quality cuts of meat our servers that the crown Grill are so
wonderful they’re really attentive they explained everything on the menu and
Mama is getting a porterhouse steak yes the 22 ounce filet sirloin I’ve always
wanted to try one and I feel like hey I’m paying $29 my whole meal I can have
whatever I want so hopefully my table mates tonight will be sharing my massive
steak of me so I ordered what did I order I kind of forgot already some kind
of a prawn appetizer and a salad and then the porterhouse and a baked potato
and some asparagus so I think we’re gonna be rolling out of here the
server’s a sweetheart she said you can get unlimited dessert all you want and
I’m assuming the only thing you can’t here that’s unlimited is entree so if
you want extra entree you pay ten bucks if you want surf and turf you also pay
ten extra but you can get lobster or steak so that’s time the weight work so
it smells so good in here it smells like garlic grilled mushrooms and just all
wonderful things cannot wait to do it I totally got beat by a steak yo okay
why did I think it was okay to order a 22 ounce porterhouse it was tasty I like
the filet mignon part but I didn’t like the sirloin part it was too fatty and
too chewy I mean you’ve got like a filet mignon on your plate and then a sirloin
right next to it that’s kind of you know tough anyway we had a great time at the
steak house it was a really nice experience the food was delicious couple
tips if you’re going to be trying the crown grill on princess number one make
reservations start early in your cruise it definitely does booked up number two
the red skin mashed potatoes are amazing my son got them of all people
none of us and then in the crowd got them but I would say was one of the best
side dishes and the garlic whatever the garlic fries are my husband
had them right garlic fries is that what you guys had polish off the whole entire
plate of them they’re super flavorful really crunchy just exquisite trust me
on that one it’s great dessert tip get the crown dependence the crown
dependence is a small sampling of all four of the desserts on the crown girl
menu and those are those are my crown girl tips for you so we got our farewell
princess Patter in the door tonight it’s so sad I don’t like this last
Patter it’s always the worst thing ever but there’s a lot of good information
here that I wanted to share with you guys number one I’m sure a lot of you
are familiar with the mobile passport control app that you can you can
download apparently Port Everglades is participating in that and so if you
wanted to allow if you’re u.s. or Canadian born citizen and you have a
passport you can do your customs declaration using your smartphone on an
app so you can do that within four hours of your debark time so that’s good to
know I also wanted to tell you guys the sweet
little picture of the most traveled Cruiser on this ship is a sweet little
lady named Thelma 1367 days with princess I think that’s really awesome
that she gets acknowledged in the newsletter so tomorrow looks fun there’s
a Family Fun Fair in the afternoon in the Piazza and lots of activity tomorrow
on our last relaxing sea day really looking forward to it
excited to just relax again really enjoy the sea days on this trip to just kind
of hang out in our cabin walk around the ship and just enjoy the passengers on
this trip have been really friendly and nice who struck up so many
conversations would just random strangers would stop and talk with us in
the photo gallery or just whatever and it’s been really Pleasant so kind of sad
that it’s winding down but ready to relax and enjoy our final sea day good
night

Awesome!!!! I've been taking a lot of ur advices while looking 4 a Cruise and Can't wait 2 get on one. QUESTION: Do u always leave Tips on the Restaurant? Thank You!

Maybe they (cab driver) get some kind of commission for bringing people 2 that beach. I saw that a lot when I traveled 2 Dominican Republic and making new friends from the Island they would tell u also.
Btw, That Corona looks delicious 😋

When we went to Grand Cayman we chartered a tour and a boat to go to Sting Ray city. Our party consisted from 2 years old to 60 years old and all ages in between. We loved it! I would love to do that again.

Is that rash guard what I think it's for? Never heard of one. But if u say yes, then I'll have to get my grandson one. Since he suffers from wearing a suit with netting inside it.

Sorry Grand Cayman wasn't what you expected. When we were there , there were only 2 ships in port, and we had a great time at Stingray City. We had snacks on our party boat and spent the rest of the time learning about, and petting the tame stingrays. It was the best excursion on our Carribbean cruise. I guess it is the luck of the draw, as we have had cancelled, rained out and broken down vehicles on other cruises. Have a safe trip home!

I have loved reliving my cruise with you guys! I think Princess is awesome! I wanted to add that I visited the turtle center which I enjoyed and a tortuga rum factory where I got a rum cake (pineapple) and sampled some rum which I did not like. We also did a photo stop at hell which was so-so. I think next time i might like to try swimming with dolphins or something. I did like Grand Caymans. I think we were the only ship there.

Pity you were on Grand Cayman for such a short time. We didn't have that long either but we had time enough to take the submarine out to the 'Wall'. It was simply amazing! The wall itself is incredible – the drop to deeper, bluer water after the shallow aqua waters was remarkable. We saw the remains of a ship wreck, dozens of kinds of fish, including a stingray. I highly recommend this trip to everyone.

I’m sure glad that I went to Hell when I was in Grand Cayman (and the stingrays too)!! Didn’t have to deal with taxis (booked thru the cruise line) & when I went to Grand Cayman we didn’t have to tender – I think we pulled right up to a brand new pier with an expensive 2 story shopping/souvenir mall. I still have my Grand Cayman tote bag (purple plastic waterproof with a zippered top – and it’s at least 10 yrs old – & cost more than tote bags in the other ports – but still one of my favorites because it is waterproof)!!
I guess beach clubs aren’t really my thing ;although my friends like them) – because I have a wonderful city beach 10 minutes away from my house – and I can bring my own beach chair & umbrella & eat at Benny’s On The Beach on the Lake Worth pier!!
Quite an interesting day for you!! Bubba & Princess would have shared that steak with you!! ❤️‼️

I have to admit I'm not a big fan of Grand Cayman overall. I've been there three times. The stops the first two times were OK, but not our favorite. We had a less than positive experience with a taxi driver last time we were there. We did fine catching a taxi to a more secluded beach, but then it started raining and it didn't stop, so we left before our preset pickup time. We caught a taxi, and then he made a stop at another beach club to try to fill up the van and got out and started hanging out and chatting with other drivers. We sat for about 25-30 minutes. Then, a female taxi driver pulled into the parking lot and asked how long we'd been waiting. She offered immediate transport back to the ship, so we switched cabs.

I'm not gonna say I told u so 🙄… I drive past the port every morning on my way to work – I should've come pick u guys up! I think the taxis just want a quick trip to go back and fill up again – even though Calico Jack's is just 6 minutes away from Royal Palms.
Funny though that my profile pic was taken at Calico Jack's lol.
Oh Sheri, I'm sorry you didn't have the best time in Grand Cayman 😔… Oh well, next time you're in my backyard I'll hook you up😉. Should've jumped on one of those noisy helicopters and do an island tour – Cayman Helicopters is a 10 minute walk in town, from the port (although I'm sure you'd have to pre book especially on such a busy cruise day).

We had an early sail away too and i wish we had more time there to explore! Cheers! 😎

I'm about to move back to Grand Cayman this summer, so I really enjoyed seeing your visit!

I'm not surprised there were 4 ships in tender while you were there! Cayman has been taking on more ships this year as many other islands are still recovering from the recent hurricanes.

Hope you had fun on my home isle! ☺

After watching the full video, I though I'd share a few pro tips from a (former) local..

If you want to save a few bucks, go to the island knowing that all beaches are considered public property (between the hotel property line and the shore is public) so you really should never have to "pay entrance" or rent a chair or umbrella if you don't want to. Taxi drivers might get tipped to drop patrons at certain hotels, so just tell them where you really want to go because they'll always be full of "suggestions" lol. Just like the ship has deals to promote certain vendors or packages, so do the cab drivers. You can ask them to drop you off at a public entrance to 7 mile beach (you may see cars parallel parked on the roads by these entrances, and there are street signs indicating them too). Or Sam's suggestion of Cemetary Beach would have been great! Caliko Jack's is a great spot as well, and they have awesome drinks.

When there are that many ships in tender, it's best to avoid 7 Mile in general. The smaller beaches are often quieter because they're not featured in so many magazines and TV shows, but they're just as beautiful.

At the end of the day, I think it's just unfortunate that you had such a short tender. Without a dock, it's hard to have enough time to do anything but sit on a beach for a couple of hours, when there is so much more to see and do on the island. But I also don't think Cayman will ever get a dock because of the harm it would do to the coral reefs. So the ships and the port rally need to plan their tenders better to give visitors more time.

Just my thoughts. Hope some of it was helpful for someone lol 🙂

I have such fond memories of that beach! It’s been 20 years since I have been there and we were the only ship and beach was empty. Then we went on a snorkel tour that took us to see so many things like a sunken airplane, ship, etc. We actually were able to see where the ocean floor drops to underwater cliffs. I am now 55 and can’t believe I snorkelled so far away from our boat but the salt water is so buoyant and amazing it was easy to do. I haven’t been back as we moved to the west coast and have been doing Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and well raising a family. I did 3 Caribbean cruises in my 20”s when living on the East Coast and my DH and I finally did a Caribbean cruise last may to St.Thomas, St. Martin and the Bahamas out of Fort Lauderdale. WE just loved it. The problem is we can get to Hawaii in 6 hours and it takes us all day to get to Florida from Vancouver, BC sadly.

I just went on a cruise and Grand Cayman was by far my least favorite port. I was so excited to go too but in the end the excursion was awful and the people made us feel very unwelcome. The water was very rough and the tenders backed up, our excursion driver was late picking us up so we had no time to souvenir shop because the tender line was about 800 people deep and we feared missing the ship. I don’t care to ever go back.

Hi Cruise family, I'm looking into your Amazon store, and I really want the pink t-shirt, so disappointed, you don't ship to Norway! Are you planning to ship internationally soon? Big fan of your channel, and have picked up so many tips. Going on my 5th cruise this Sept in the Med. In 2010, on our first cruise, we missed the Grand Cayman island, because of a Hurricane. A bit upset, because we were going swimming with dolphins. But Royal Caribbean fixed it, so we went swimming with the dolphins in Mexico instead. After this, I have been hooked on cruising.

It was so great watching your Caribbean Princess journey! I’m home now and it was so nice to watch all these videos and relive the cruise from a different point of view (also peeking in at some places that staff doesn’t usually go!). You seem like you really enjoyed it, and once again it was so nice meeting you! Can’t wait to see the video from your last sea day 😊

You are my kind of lady. Had a drink in your hand at all times just like I did on my cruise. Lol.

I’ve been to royal palms and loved it. Of course we didn’t have 5 ships but we went walking down 7 mile beach and explored. I’ll take your advice if we have 5 ships and go to a different place.

Do you need to bring your own beach towels to the cruise?
