Project Hernandez, Rescuing U.S. Coast Guard Hispanic heritage


[ Castillo ] Fireman Heriberto Hernandez saved two officers lives while on an intelligence gathering patrol on a river in Vietnam. [ Petrak ] He was mortally wounded while navigating his boat through enemy fire. [ Espinoza ] Because of his bravery he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. [ Reynoso ] Heroes like Hernandez exist throughout the Coast Guard [ Flores ] And we need your help rediscovering and honoring them. [ Pacheco ] As Coast Guardsmen we honor our history. [ Petrak ] It inspires us. [ Flores ] Defines who we are and what we stand for. [ Pacheco ] However, our history is not complete. [ Castillo ] Project Hernandez is a field initiative, supported by headquarters to rediscover the tremendous accomplishments of Latinos in the Coast Guard. The project was named after Heriberto Hernandez and his brother Hector who joined the Coast Guard to fight in Vietnam after Heriberto was killed there. [ Espinoza ] Please send all of your memories, stories and photographs of heroic Latinos, past and present. [ Castillo ] To the Atlantic Area historian Dr. Bill Thiesen. so you may help us complete our brilliant history. [ Petrak ] So you may help us complete our brilliant history.     Hello, I'm wondering when/where that photo at 0:15 was taken–the photo of ground troops in what looks like a tropical area. Are there Coast Guardsmen in that photo?
