SailAway 58 | Buying a Liveaboard Sailboat – Sailboat Tours Part 1 | Sailboat Living Sailing Vlog

last time on sale away we celebrated the
end of an era with a final goodbye toast aboard Laila this week the new sail away
era begins as we start our boat search do you wanna say I wanna say with me hello hi welcome to buying a
boat so you don’t have to live on the street with sail away or my parents or
whose boat is it anyway hello and welcome to let’s make a deal on a boat
I’m Lauren I’m Eric that’s Zeke he’s on a ferry Rivers is
watching whoopee it’s getting it as much bloody time as he can to do this video
is brought to you by day drinking their biggest sponsor we are future Eric and
Lauren speaking to you about our boat search which is pretty much culminated
but we’re not going to give away the ending of this story we’re just gonna
take you through each of the boats that we looked at and talk about what we were
looking for in the first place and how those things from there
morphed and changed along the way so starting off
let’s tell you some of our parameters after the dogs barked first off Headroom
is one thing just cuz I’m six-two extremely tall that’s all enough that
I’m kind of tall for boats sometimes nothing sucks more than having to duck
constantly I’ve told her yeah I have no idea
that’s not my problem overall space kind of plays into that as well and also the
fact that I’m will be working on the boat so I need space to be able to set
up my studio I didn’t do this bill hero3 visibility room to work for us most
likely be three cabins one for us one for rivers and then one for me to work
in and also hopefully double us a guest suite l galley we tend to like the
l-shaped galleys with a little side bench in the living-room area just
because we feel it gives you a little more living space
it separates things a little better and with our financing we need it to be
newer than 2000 well no we need it to be newer than 1999 less than 20 years old
so we were kind of sticking to 2001 less than $200,000 we’re trying to find
pretty much ready to go vote when we know we’ll have to do some things to
almost any vote we don’t want to spend a year to any yard fixing up of those
200,000 struck us as the upper level of what we feel comfortable with and I
wouldn’t have to work too much hopefully to kind of keep that going needs to have
an a/c and a generator for the working thing cut the edge off the heat at the
end of the day to get to sleep we want that luxury
you see another luxury that way you would like is a thruster bow thruster
yep yeah well these yeah these are big boats that we’re talking about to get
all the things that we’re listing off here we’re talking 45 to 50 foot ranges
mostly well then we looked at and a big boat a bow thruster it was very very
helpful in tight spaces yes go for I’ve done all of them so far and you just
front-loading fridge obviously we want a nice galley and front-loading fridge for
a live aboard situation is very nice because you can get to it from the top
and from the front I know my hair is all fit so a cockpit large cockpit is what
we want a large cockpit we like double wheels just cuz of that extra space and
ease of driving and visibility from the cockpit we really want that to be as
most liveaboards do your extra living room extra family room and so we want it
to be a nice big comfortable area in addition to all our space down below
fast and good ceiling we want it to be a fast engine which don’t what a birthday
you can handle well and it’s easy to sail and easy to tack fast and all those
kind of things we need it to not not be too much xaf we don’t need a DIY though
but even in this range there are some that need a lot of work and we kind of
want it to be ready to go so that we can get out of the cruise we’re not saying
we won’t do some work for sure that’s what we’re looking for
so there you have it yeah and with that enjoy the first boat actually enjoy all
the boats yes Sunshine State we’re gonna look at especially going so
we looked at yesterday is a Benetton 473 which
I don’t know if I would see it’s like if I don’t think it’s like really I love
this but I love you know that’s appreciate told him just because they’re
a bottle friend they are really well regarded they’re early we just they’ll be our first we are on the 45 bs we are on the just a
ton of room that’s my high level Lauren you can actually see out those kitchen
yeah and these are at face level all the way around
nice big v-berth not overly huge bed but certainly think it would be big enough
for us really cool master head and shower but then you got an enclosed shower that
doesn’t get everything wet so I think that’s pretty slick freezer and fridge
double sink a lot of drawers for burner stove microwave and then two really big
aft berths these beds are bigger than the V berth but this one this layout is
what we’re kind of looking for so that Rivers has his own room and then we also
haven’t another room for storage and and the other head which is also a nice size okay well that’s bad we do it again
you’re not allowed to burn the motown there’s not be connected either well
China freakin cockpit it’s really nice beautiful deck very wide 64 foot mast
dooms a little air and I would have thought no no
I’d like to see one that has the bimini and Dodger up see how that works alright Beneteau 49 the metal – those
are really one that we even like kind of planned on that but that was very wise yeah so we’re gonna love it it’s big I mean you can just see so good from
back here so nice you lay a mattress up in their camp out huge Norfolk mast still get under the
bridges looking back very big living area
embarrassing so this transverse and after birth
makes it takes up space in a nice way and then gives room for this extra bonus
room very big galley yeah and then this wolf down into
another another berth also huge nav station
gigantic apt head you can close a shower that goes through
to the back good keep my hat this out works i buy hats and then she
puts them on looks better and then I don’t wear anymore
as I suspected this is evident it’s kind of circular
shower door thing make it stable that’s a fan drag is he screen on one side shoot on the other oh my gosh what is that it’s like a
liner or something the key moves all right well I’m sweating
cool if we find one the price is right I think it would be a contender welcome back so are we gonna buy this
book we’re gonna do a little summary of the boats been Attila 473 it was the
first one you saw number one 2003 pros so the cockpit was very nice very
spacious it had the double wheels that we were
looking for it was three cabins it was priced at one hundred and thirty
thousand dollars which was a very good price searcher it had nice line
good-looking vote fast boat and it was well regarded is what I do
cons side galley three heads kind of rough kind of high engine hours just
needed a lot of love all around need new canvas new sails electronics were old so
that one definitely would fall into the somewhat of a fixer-upper and not really
Jeannot 45 DS 2006 deck salon I’ll do pros newer 2006 so financing that makes
a little easier very clean stylist of really pretty boat
three cabin good Headroom newer sails so we probably don’t have to do much with
those good electronics and again good visibility below and in the cockpit as
well nice big cock or Mekons were the price tag it was two hundred and ten
thousand did feel slightly tight down below there
was no generator there wasn’t much extra room in the aft
cabin for the workspace and it didn’t have any Bimini or dogger that’s it for
that one that is it last one which was the newest one is the Benin Togo 49 2008
so very new boat clean stylings a really pretty boot this one had a unique layout
bow thruster decent electronics sail Locker
so the cons were this one also did not have a generator at the top of the price
range it’s not even in our price range the unique layout Pro antha it was a
little rough and the Headroom actually wasn’t as good as we would have expected
for a 49 right for that price in that year of vote was pretty cramped so there
you have it oh plane break so there you have it that our trial coming up yeah
maybe so there you have it that’s the first three boats in our search we got
many more to come any upcoming episodes oh hi buddy
and we will probably talk about the hunter 49 that we lost the photo yeah
we’ll figure out something we will that’s it for this week thank

The boat with the free tampon was rad. In case the bilge pump goes out you can throw the tampon in the bilge and it sucks up all of the water.

Thanks for sharing. Are catamarans not your style? For the money, a 39' to 42' cat may beat mono on rooms, stability at anchorages, and resell value. But yes, demand is high and supply is limited, so not as easy to find a suitable one. Best wishes.

Dear SailAway:  if you still looking for a Bigger Sailboat, you may want to buy a Sailboat from the Great Lakes because there not use that much . Plus freshwater don't hurt the sailboat as Saltwater does. Also your friend in Marble Head can help . I'm looking into learning to Sail this year and hope I can find a Capt will teach a old Dog how to Sail. There is a  lot of FRESHWATER Boats in your Price.  Take Care and GOD BLESS to your Family.

    Check IVT yacht sales

Out of all the ones you listed, the 473 is the best if you have the scratch to get it back into shape.

Hey guys, don't know how far you are along with your boat buying, but just watched an interesting video by another sailing couple going through the same process, I'll add the exact video link on bottom, but basically they went with USAA lending/finance because they didn't require a max age on the boat and believe it or not didn't even require a survey !…this may open your doors to some beautiful older boats that cost significantly less. I think they ultimately bought a Morgan 462 in prestine condition for like 49k…only stipulation is USAA requires military background from you, your parents or grandparents…wish you guys the best of luck & Eric let's hear another sunset acoustic song 🙂

Im not trying to be a dick here but I thought id mention two things as feedback for you. Your camera movement and cutting really throw my eyes into a strain. Example 10:42. Was really fast camera movement and then as you went toward your partner you were say 8 foot away and then you were there. I would suggest watching it again from 8 mins in as that is when you kind of went hypo with the camera movement sometimes on both boats. Also the cutting from one scene to another though me as there were so many in a short time so it was like it was all over the place. Iv subbed your channel and ill look forward to your videos in future but please slow down with that camera lol. Seriously mate no offence etc at all im just trying to give you some helpful feed back. PS I will be taking you to court for my eye damage and headache though 🙂 PPS I will settle out of court if I can come on a boat trip 🙂

Are you looking into Catamarans as well?

  • April 16, 2019 at 9:47 pm

Instead of always seeing a woman sitting, nicely dressed, sipping a cool drink, I'd like to see one working, covered in grease and paint, no a/c, taking cold showers in the rain, chuckles, kinda like looking for a Unicorn right?

  • April 16, 2019 at 11:49 pm

Hey Eric, I'm having a difficulty I was going to look at your personal website and it won't load?

  • April 17, 2019 at 4:32 am

    Commenting mostly for your metrics….

Just found you guys. I'm gonna bet you guys will get a lot of new subscribers with these boat tours, pricing, and the perceived pros / cons. Good luck!

What are your plans once you buy a boat? Staying in a certain area or broader travels?

  • April 18, 2019 at 2:42 pm

your voice kinda sounds like nathan fillion.

  • April 19, 2019 at 10:31 pm

New Sub 07 why are you stuck on a Mono hull ?

  • June 20, 2019 at 3:13 pm

Out of interest how firm are you on the idea of a mono hull, just asking because most of your requirements seem to better fulfilled by a cat
