Summer Safety Series – Kayaks and Canoes

Hi, my name is Alistair Nisbet. I’m a Senior Sergeant at the Water Police. As part of the Summer Safety Series, today
we want to talk about kayaks or canoes. We’ve found that there’s a significant increase
in ownership of these particular crafts around Victoria. There’s also a very serious side to it. Kayaks or person paddle craft contribute
to nearly one-third of all marine-related fatalities over the past decade. So, it’s very important when you own these
crafts that there is a number of things you do before you go out into the water. First, understand your own physical capability
and the limitations with that. Secondly, make sure that you’ve got the right
safety equipment on board. Thirdly, that you practice regularly just
in case that you do fall off the craft, that you can get back on it and practice that in
shallow water. Fourthly, make sure that you have the ability
to raise the alarm if you need help.
