U.S. Coast Guard warns people to stay safe on Lake Michigan over the holiday weekend

METEOROLOGIST CHRIS WAYNE TOE TELLS IS COMING YOU NEED TO STAY SAFE.>>A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT OF THE WATER, BUT IMPORTANT TO KEEP SAFETY IN MIND.>>IT IS HEAVY. I WOULD NOT TRY TO LAUNCH THIS BOAT ON THE WEEKEND.>>BOATS ARE LAUNCHING TO GET THEIR SPOTS ON THE WATER THIS WEEKEND. THEY TAKE A LOT OF CALLS THIS TIME OF YEAR.>>THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER, WE GET 100 CASES, RESPONSES TO DISABLED AND ADRIFT VESSELS, PEOPLE IN THE WATER, CAP SIZE VESSELS OR TAKING ON WATER.>>BUT IT CAN TAKE TIME FOR THE COAST GUARD TO GET TO PEOPLE. THAT IS WHY STRICKLAND SAYS YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE A PLAN FOR AN EMERGENCY AND LIFE JACKETS WHETHER YOU HAVE TWO LEGS OR FOUR. AND WHILE AVID BOATERS MAY BE FAMILIAR THEIR SAFETY PLAN, THEY SHOULD SHARE IT WITH GUESTS WHO DON’T GO OUT ON THE WATER AS MUCH.>>I THINK ONE THING THAT IS OVERLOOKED ON BOATS IS WHEN PEOPLE ARE GOING OUT FOR A RECREATIONAL SAIL, THEY OFTEN DON’T GO OVER ALL THE SAFETY EQUIPMENT WITH THEIR GUESTS. AS A CHARTER BOAT, WE DO THAT ALL THE TIME. I END UP DOING THAT WITH MY FRIENDS TOO.
