Volvo Penta Boating Dreams Episode 4 – Ruben Donné

My name is Ruben Donné
and this is my boating dream. I sailed a 6.5 meters small boat
across the Atlantic Ocean by myself. From Belgium to Cape Town with one
stop over in Salvador de Bahia in Brazil, taking me three months to sail across
the Atlantic. My dad has multiple sclerosis, so I was raising awareness and funds for MS research. I was challenging people to buy a mile for MS. Every mile that I was sailing was sold for 10 euros. People could write
their name on my sail for 10 euros. Like this I would take their name across
the Atlantic Ocean with me, and make MS research projects in Belgium possible. Arriving here in Cape Town was quite
amazing for me, especially because my dad came out to the sea. We couldn’t speak to each other yet, but the eye contact we had said enough. Having my dad standing here on the
jetty while I was arriving was for sure the most special moment we had in
our lives together. Undoubtedly, actually. Of course he was the big
motivation for me doing this, and although the sailing across the
Atlantic has always been a dream, it’s him being diagnosed with
multiple sclerosis, that made me actually go for the dream and say now it’s the
time to do it, and change the dream into actually doing it. I have accomplished my boating dream But although, once the ocean gets a hold of you, it is difficult to be on shore for a long time. So my next dream would be to sail around the world.
